Sleep Apnea Appliances

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a chronic (ongoing) condition in which your breathing pauses or is shallow while you sleep, resulting in a loud snort or choking sound, causing you to move out of deep sleep and into light sleep. Poor sleep quality is often the result and you may find yourself feeling tired throughout the day. Excessive daytime sleepiness is most often associated with sleep apnea. It is very common for people who have sleep apnea to be unaware that they do because it only occurs during sleep. It is often a family member and/or bed partner that may first notice the signs of sleep apnea. Patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea have a 70-80% successful treatment for their symptoms with oral appliances, where about 70-100% of the snoring is eliminated. The number is higher for patients who snore without sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Appliance

An oral appliance is a small, lightweight device that fits over the upper and lower teeth or tongue, similar to an orthodontic retainer or mouth guard. This device slightly advances the lower jaw or tongue, which moves the base of the tongue forward and increases the airway opening. This improves breathing and reduces snoring and sleep apnea. Each appliance is custom made for each patient. The appliances are comfortable and well-tolerated by most patients. They are easy to place and remove. Cleaning the device is easy, and they are most convenient for travel.
